BATCHING

Batching is the precise addition of individual fluids into a final mixture, with each fluid dispensed at its own rate. Unlike blending, where fluids are combined simultaneously, batching focuses on volume accuracy for each component to achieve the correct overall mixture. 

To ensure accuracy, batching systems must control the volume of each fluid independently, regardless of how fast the other fluids are moving. This makes flow measurement a critical component in batching applications. 

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLOW METER FOR BATCHING

The performance of your batching system depends heavily on how fluid velocity behaves during the process. Here's how to determine which flow meter technology is best suited: 

  • When velocity changes are significant (longer start-up/shutoff times):
    Use a Positive Displacement (PD) meter, such as an Oval Gear meter. These meters excel at capturing accurate volume even during flow fluctuations. 

  • When velocity changes are minimal (brief start-up/shutoff times):
    You can use either a Positive Displacement meter or a Velocity-type meter like an Ultrasonic or Turbine meter, as flow is mostly steady during the batch.

BLENDING

Blending is the simultaneous mixing of two or more fluids by precisely controlling their individual flow rates to achieve a desired ratio. Unlike batching, where fluids are added one at a time, blending relies on real-time control of fluid velocities to create a continuous, consistent solution.

In a blending setup, each fluid must be measured and adjusted independently to maintain the correct proportions throughout the process.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLOW METER FOR BLENDING

It’s important to distinguish between controlling the blend ratio and measuring the total solution volume—these functions may require different flow meter technologies.

  • Flow Control: To ensure each fluid enters the blend at the correct rate, use meters that offer fast response time and precise flow rate control. Technologies such as Paddlewheel or Turbine meters are commonly used here due to their real-time measurement capabilities and compatibility with control systems.

  • Total Volume Monitoring: To track the overall amount of blended solution produced, a Positive Displacement (PD) meter—like an Oval Gear meter—may be better suited. These meters provide highly accurate total volume measurements, especially useful for final batch validation.
